Liability Auto Insurance
Liability auto insurance is available to protect others from your own actions. It could be in the form of Bodily Injury Liability or Property Damage Liability that you buy your liability auto insurance. This will protect you and your assets from costly lawsuits, as long as you are amply covered.
When you are buying your auto insurance, it is easy to get caught up in the pricing of the plans that you are given. Most people do not look forward to getting to pay hundreds, or even thousands of dollars to cover an auto. The purpose is to get the right coverage, and then focus on how to save money on your auto insurance.
That said, there are some states in which liability auto insurance is governed by law. You must carry it. And, you must carry liability auto insurance to a certain limit. Though, for the most part, sense and sensibility will tell you that you do need liability auto insurance. And, if you look, at your assets, you will see that you need it at least to the degree that your money is concerned.
Covering Yourself
While your liability auto insurance would be paying out to other people, it really is all about covering yourself. Even if you have no assets, you do not want a court judgment to follow you around in life, garnishing wages and taking from you for years to come. Because, if you are the cause of a serious accident that involves serious injuries or even fatalities, you are then considered the reason that someone else cannot work, or loses wages due to a dead spouse, for instance. So, they turn to you for remuneration.
This is why it is so important to never drive without insurance. You could actually face jail time, fees. And, do not leave out the court costs and legal fees, which will cost you thousands of dollars. While it is inadvisable to drive uninsured, you will want to purchase uninsured motorist coverage, to make sure that you are remunerated from your auto insurance company if you are harmed or your property damaged by an uninsured driver.
You may also want to carry what is called underinsured motorist coverage or even antique automobile insurance. The underinsured are those who have state legal minimum coverage, typically. You may be required to carry a state minimum of liability insurance to be considered legally allowed to drive within the state. While it is important to buy at least this minimum of liability auto insurance, realize you may still be underinsured.
Amply Covered
When you are buying your auto insurance, make sure that you not only cover your assets and yourself against the accidents others and mother nature can cause, but also against the actual value an accident can cause. You yourself do not want to be underinsured, because it leaves you open to lawsuits. When you buy legal minimum coverage in your state, it may only cover, say $10,000 per person, up to $30,000 maximum for all medical injuries.
More likely than not, if someone just takes an ambulance ride from the scene to the hospital, that alone can cost $1,000. A hospital stay, even for one day, could eat up that $10,000 just to sleep in the bed. That does not include the surgeries, medications, therapies, recovery and lost wages from not working. You may want to buy as much auto coverage as you can afford to avoid huge liability expenses.
It is not only important to cover yourself against the liability damages that you could cause, but it is also great to consider how you can save money when you buy coverage. Your liability can be bought for less money if you go online and compare quote rates side by side. You can see what each liability auto insurance policy offers for their quotes. Some may offer just higher prices.
Do also take a look at the value of the companies that are providing you with pricing. Some are more highly regarded among consumers than others. It is worth the time to find out which are most likely to be polite, efficient and helpful during particularly emotionally trying times. Hopefully they have helpful customer service that keeps you in the loop about the progress of your claims process for you.
Liability auto insurance can save you nicely in the long run. This is particularly true if you have the unfortunate position of causing an accident that results in serious bodily injury, fatality or serious property damages. At least you can make sure that those who suffer are remunerated so they can try to get back to their normal lives. And, hopefully they can get their body and health back into shape so that they may function properly, and even hopefully return to work.
